As Early as 1884 the Union Metallic Cartridge Company began to produce the .22 Long Rifle cartridge, it owes its origin to the .22 BB Cap of 1845, .22 Short of 1857, the case of .22 Long of 1871 and with a 40 grain bullet giving it a longer overall length.
